Going Old School

Since its approaching summer and we're finding less and less to talk about, I figured I'd bring up a favorite subject amongst readers of this blog.... the MSU Football Jerseys.

Longtime MSU beat writer Steve Grinczel posted a blog last week indicating that the MSU football is going with somewhat of a throwback look for next season.

According to Grinz, "The jerseys will remain plain. The fancy type used for the 'Michigan State' across the chest is gone.... The look will revert back to the Futura bold typeface that emblazoned the storied 1966 team's jersey."

Here's a look at the difference being described.

It was also noted that Spartan emblem will remain on both sides of the helmet and the green pants are gone for good.

Although these style changes are minor, I'm in favor of the new look. How about you?

I've always thought the Times New Roman font looked strange on an athletic uniform, so I'm in favor.

Will the numbers be on the shoulders still? Will there be any strip on the helmet?

I am glad the 2007 State team will have the old school look, plus the deletion of the green pants. I only hope Coach Mark makes these guys wear socks. Nothing looks as bad for the University image as these players with the no sock look.

I liked the green pants with the white jerseys, but not with the green jerseys. I wonder if players' names will return to the back of the jersey, if some one will be allowed the #1. I like keeping the spartan logo on the helmets and hope there is no stripe.

I liked the now "old" uniforms. No names on the Jerseys. No Stripe on the Helmet. Whatever. As long as the don't wear the monstrosities from the Bobby Williams era. Oh and if we want to get rid of some of the image of being "flaky" maybe we will stop changing our uniforms every time we change coaches!

In favor of the new look. Personally, however, I think they should take it a step further and change the logo on the helmet to the old school Spartan head that they wore last year in the "throwback" game vs. ND. It's similiar to the artwork on the USC helmet of the Trojan. I think the old school Spartan on the helmet is the goods.

I like the old school Spartan emblem for the sake of historical pride, but the problem is that the one we use now is not just for football but it's a university wide logo, probably at least as recognizable nationally as is the block S. And I like the contemporary Spartan for its silhouetted simplicity. If I recall, the old one is somewhat detailed and while detail is fine in some art, as far as logos go I think they should be bold and simple, especially since they're often seen from a distance.

I didn't mind the green pants. I think so much of what people like or dislike in uniforms depends upon whether the team won or lost in them. One reason why I like the green pants is that just about every school has white in its color scheme, whether its an official school color or not. So I don't think we need to emphasize the white part of our school colors so much as the green (per the name of this blog). Who says they bleed white? People with massive infections?

Yeah, who cares. The changes are so minor that I'm not concerned. If they're going to go "old school" I think that they should also incorporate black shoes.

White shoes are for fairies and teams from California.

I don't care about the lettering. Please keep the Spartan Logo on both sides of the helmet. I do like the green pants with the white top jersey. It is more distinct. The all white uniform for road games looks like the team is playing in long underware. Lets hope this throw back to the 60's isn't a character of this coaching staff. How about making your own foot print in the sand ,as Izzo says. Let's not start off by looking backwards. That was then this is now!!

I know what we can talk about: THE BIG TEN NETWORK! It better be added to Comcast and for no extra cost! The cost of cable has gone out of sight! They are not going to carry the Plus Games. So Comcast should give us this station for free! I only watch is for half a year anyway! What will they think of next to raise prices as an excuse!

I say Good Luck to Sam Vincent!

As long as they win, I guess I don't care what they wear...as long as its not that yellow bra that the weasels wear on their head.

We do need an alternate uni. I'm in favor of a Virginia Tech type style: one white shoulder pad and the rest is green. But whatever, so long as the new uniform info was passed along to EA Sports for NCAA 2K8, I'm fine with it.

I was a huge fan of the classic look that JLS sort of re-instated. I think that the subtle changes Dantonio is making reinforce that look and am very pleased with it. I didn't hate the all green look, but if it wasn't for everyone, then that's okay too. I guess I did like the font on the JLS uniforms better, but I suppose serifs on a football uniform are a little out of place.

I'm just glad that MSU is finally willing to ignore changing fad-ish uniforms every few years and stick with something that is traditional but still looks nice.

To recapture the classic spirit of Michigan State football, all the design folks need is a photo of Don Coleman or George Saimes in game day uniform. Tom Culligan MSU '66 New York City

I would prefer not taking it in the can every saturday afternoon w/ poor tacklingm and fundamentals, rather than talking about uniforms. However, if there is some psychological benefit and /or corrolation between the uniforms and bringing back the tradition of defense, so be it. I just hope it translates to some form of resepct and diginity in the conference.

Everyone has their own opinions about style, but I find it interesting that we expect uniforms to remain how they were in the 60's. I would argue that none of us would be caught dead wearing clothing from that era, so why expect the football team to look like that. See the bball team (although I dont like the new unis),every other Spartan squad, and your own closet for additional support for my point.

Tradiitonal small print "MICHIGAN STATE" across the front. Emblen on helmet with stripe. Names on jersey. Yes, someone can wear the #1.

No green pants no matter what anytime anywhere. Burn them all.

I long for the day when State doesn't have to have "Michigan State" on the front of the jerseys to let people know who we are. Always liked the stripe on the helmets and keep the green pants w/white jerseys.
