MSU Women: Record-breaking game
You gotta love it when you can watch a team break a record, even if it is in a nonconference game against a team that really didn't have a chance.
The MSU women beat Niagara 116-50 tonight at the Breslin Center, scoring the most points ever for the program. Meanwhile, Lauren Aitch had a career-high 25 points and 8 rebounds. And Courtney "Mad Dog" Schiffauer broke the 20-point mark as well (and, MAN, can she jockey for position under the basket).
For a runaway game, it still managed to be a fun one to watch. Sure, there's still some fine-tuning to be done -- as there should be at this point -- but the deep bench makes this feel like a team that's going to make a name for itself thise season.
Up next: Stony Brook at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Bres. See you there.

Women's basketball isn't trendy enough for anyone to care.
Sad.

The women in my social group, and also part of the crowd who attend men's football and basketball events don't even talk about women's sports.
I know there's a place and interest in women's sports to some degree in certain crowds, but I'm not sure this blog is the place. Fair or not this blog is dominated by men who want to debate men's sports.

SpartininYork, you don't speak for all men. Some of us like being updated on the women's team. They are exciting to watch, especially for those of us with daughters playing basketball.
There is plenty of interest in women's sports to warrant the occassionaly blog entry. You and Fred were interested enough to read the post.

Marc,
Don't take it personal or be so sensitive. I'm just bored today because MSU football is taking the day off.
I'm sure women's sports would be exciting to me to if I had a daughter as a sport participant. My daughter made me proud when she participated in ballet, so I do understand the interest with men who have daughters or brothers who have sisters as atheletes.

If you're going to cover a niche sport that not many are interested in how about the men's soccer team...playing for the Big Ten Tourney championship against Indiana tomorrow...Great story line...They play Indiana (whom they beat early this season for the 1st time since 1965...).

SpartaninYork, I was wasn't taking it personal or being sensitive. I was merely pointing out that you and your "social group" may not be representative of the whole. Then again, you might be. I just think a blog update can be appreciated, especially since if people don't care about it they don't have to click on it.

I enjoy hearing about success in any MSU sport, men's and women's. Of course success in the big three is most important. The more success in the revenue sports will bring more success in the non-revenue sports and then more people may become interested in soccer (women's team just won in the first round of the NCAA tournament) and women's basketball. If we had a women's basketball team on par with Tenn and UConn, tell me that you won't watch them in the Final Four. GO STATE

Pacific NW
I can tell you that exactly! I got excited a couple years ago when the women's bball team was in the NC against baylor (i think), and watched for about 10 mins before realizing that i just couldn't get excited because the quality was just so much lower than the men.

I bleed green, and I love ALL Spartan sports. Brign it on women -- you are truly spartans too.
PS I LOVE IT that you are not called the Lady Spartans. You are Spartans.
Great game, I love bing updated because I can't get to the games.
Go Green!

As a Spartan fan I want to know about and support every Spartan sport. Women's basketball at the highest level is both very good and very competitive. I am very glad that this year's team is off to a good start. I'll always be rooting for them. Incidentally I'm also a man.
