Possible MSU Hoops Commitment Next Week?
It's possible that MSU may add another 4-star hoops commitment next week. Jamil Wilson, a 6-7 wing from Racine, Wis. is expected to make a decision on March 8 as to where he will enroll in Fall 2009.
Wilson has narrowed his choices to Michigan State, Oregon and Texas although the Longhorns seem to be a distant third in that pecking order if published reports are correct. Wilson is having a great senior season on a team that earlier in February was the #3 ranked team in Wisconsin. He is averaging over 20 points and 11 rebounds per game. He seems to be a bright guy and according to multiple reports I have read, Wilson is a great athlete and a true "slasher" with a developing outside shot and a wiry frame.
Wilson sounds a lot like a cross between Morris Peterson and Durrell Summers at a similar age although Peterson wasn't highly recruited and Summers (like Wilson) was. He's a guy for whom the back-door alley-oop passes that have become a staple of the MSU offensive over the years would be run.
The date of March 8 is significant because that is the date Wilson's mother died, and he wants to honor her by making his announcement next Sunday. Again, he seems like a good kid who fits into the Izzo mold. Plus he's also a good friend of Korie Lucious, who played AAU ball with him and the freshman point guard needs to pull out all the stops in the coming week to make sure Jamil is on campus next year!

I have to say I like MSU's chances considering that Oregon is winless in the Pac-10 and head coach Ernie Kent might be fired within the next couple of weeks. Keep your fingers crossed. Wilson would be a key recruit because next year's class includes two big men (Garrick Sherman and Derrick Nix) and the 2010 class already includes two guards (Keith Appling and Russell Byrd). So securing a wing would be a key. Wilson has been rated anywhere from a top 35 player to a top 100 player regardless of position.
One quick note about Michigan's win Thursday over Purdue: who cares what the Wolverines do?
Look, I don't like Michigan basketball either. But they are not at our level as a program and probably won't be for some time. Johnny B. is a good coach. As long as he's here, Michigan will probably be an NCAA team more often than not, although they aren't likely to be a top 10-15 team nationally. They are going to make the NCAAs, if not this year than probably next year (unless Deshawn Sims goes pro).
Purdue losing was good for MSU and that's what matters. Don't obsess over U-M hoops. Do you agree?
