Viewing Spartan Football Will be More Expensive
I see Michigan State announced today that it will cost $3 more per game on a football season ticket purchase, from $41 to $44 per game. This means that a regular season ticket will increase from $287 to $308 for the seven game package.
I guess there are a few ways this news can be viewed. First, $3 is pretty cheap, especially since they are not going to raise men's basketball or hockey ticket prices. Assuming they sell about 60,000 season tickets again this year (and that's a stretch considering the economy), this will add about $1.25 million to athletic department income. My question is: shouldn't they have considered a greater increase of say, $5 to $7? This would have generated more income and still be a reasonable increase amount.
On the other hand, with the way the economy is, would it have been better to leave ticket prices alone and increase other sources of game-day income like parking, concessions and programs? I'm not really sure which would have been the better approach. Something probably had to be done. What are your opinions on the subject?
