Scout.com is reporting that William Gholston committed to MSU early this morning. In fact they have him as a commit on the Scout.com website.
Other forums and blogs also reported that Gholston recently wore a green and white tuxedo to his prom (apparently he went with a friend as a junior), disturbing at least one U-M fan. So maybe this reported commitment shouldn't come as a surprise. Also WDFN 1130 AM in Detroit is also reporting this morning that Gholston committed to MSU.
That would make the 4th commitment for the class of 2010, and certainly the most notable one to date. All four of those recruits are from the state of Michigan with three coming from the city of Detroit, where the Spartans struggled to get players under John L. Smith. As my former classmate Joe Rexrode has reported in his blog, more commitments are expected in the coming days as MSU holds and wraps up its high school camp.
Be sure to check back to the State Journal today for updates from Joe and the rest of the Sports staff. This is quite possibly the most notable MSU football commitment since...Drew Stanton? Charles Rogers? Who am I forgetting?

I think Gholston has been even more of a high profile recruit than Baker ever was. Look at his blood lines. Great job Coach D and staff!

Wasn't TJ Duckett number 1 in the country?
Posted by: Dr. J | June 16, 2009 at 11:15 AM
I'm surprised Shannon Brown has gotten no love from this site. he guy just won the first NBA title for a Spartan since, who? Willis?
Posted by: cleavesrules | June 16, 2009 at 11:28 AM
TJ Duckett was more highly ranked, but considering Gholston's cousin starred at OSU and UM generally kills us in the Detroit area (ESPECIALLY on the d-line), I would consider Gholston maybe the biggest recruit we've gotten since I've followed MSU football - late 80's

since... Kirk Cousins!!
Posted by: tanfan | June 16, 2009 at 11:43 AM
Duckett came before Charles Rogers if I remember correctly. Rogers was at least top 25 if not top 5 if I remember.
And do we know if Baker's knee is good to go yet? Never like having knee injuries in high school.

JR's Evil Twin, just to ease your fears about knee injuries to HS football players. Ringer suffered a knee injury his Senior year. We know what happened once he made it to campus...

Didn't Ringer have another knee injury at MSU? Granted he had great junior and senior years but that doesn't mean knee injuries don't continue to be a problem.
And was Ringer here 5 or 6 years (with an extra medical redshirt?)

Great recruiting news. Nice to see Dantonio doing so well in Detroit and in the state of Michigan.
I was also thinking about who the last Spartans were to win a NBA title and I think both Steve Smith and Kevin Willis were on the 2005 San Antonio title team.

way to steal my username! i guess i dont hold any copyright to it so have at it. this is a great recruit and should generate a lot of national buzz for the program. the list of top schools that were after this guy reads like the top 10 in the BCS every year. USC, Bama and Notre Dame among many high profile others all wanted this guy. hopefully the hype translates into real results on the field.

Hopefully, this will open other top recruits eyes that Michigan State is a program to be strongly considered.
Maybe he can have the same effect in football that Mateen's commit did in hoops.
Great work staff and welcome to the Spartan family big Bill!

This is an incredible recruiting win. It says that Mark Dantonio is building a "program". At last.
We talk about Michigan, but the schools that MSU must first pass in the Big Ten Football race are Wisconsin and Iowa. These are the two programs that are very solid in Big Ten right now. They are the near term competition.

Glad to see that we're getting big time recruits in-state! I agree about our boy S. Brown!!!! I've been cheering for the Lakers throughout the playoffs because of Shannon Brown.
Go State!

Big deal...he'll be redshirted and won't see the field over 2 years....you had rogers, duckett and smoker...all 5 stars and never won crap.

Debbie Downer!?...
Mark it down Trevor Anderson will have a huge year at DE. Greg Jones will be a beast at Middle Line backer. Year after, Gholston pawning QB's. Nice.

Can't the "Bleeding Green" team step up and post a shout out for Shannon Brown... a World Champ and a Spartan! Where is your Spartan Pride Green Team!?
Posted by: rooster | June 17, 2009 at 07:07 AM
Rooster, who cares about the NBA? Seriously?
Posted by: Big Jon G | June 17, 2009 at 08:31 AM
Well the Detroit News reports his coach as saying its only a "soft" commitment. Hope he is not one of these Sedrick Irvin types who committed to 6 schools before choosing State. I'll feel better when he's inked next February.
If this IS true, wonder how long it will take for the first scUM post to say that they weren't really interested in him and that they recruit "nationally".
Posted by: Rob | June 17, 2009 at 09:20 AM
Seriously, indeed, Big Jon G... The NBA IS NOT BASKETBALL. Brown left early for the $. Why? To sit the pine most of the last three years in that awful charade? Like he wouldn't have been an even higher draft pick after another campaign at State...

MD is building a solid program at MSU. he is not taking any shortcuts. MSU will be national title contenders very soon if this keeps up.
