Don't Eat Your Lawn
If spring fever's got you ready to rip out the lawn for an herb garden or veggie bonanza, use an old kitchen knife to remove the top layer (the sod) while leaving behind a maximum of rich soil.
This will let you (re)move the sod, while saving your back from unnecessarily moving out the good soil below.
Slice the perimeter of your planned garden bed by stepping a shovel straight down into the sod.
Then peel up sections (you can roll them if you wish) and slice a layer about to three inches from the top.
This classic pre-election video shows a version of the technique. You can also simply turn over a shovelful of sod with the soil below still clumped on--make sure to add plenty of compost to your bed!
all lawns, be gone! so exciting
