More details on Granholm's surgery

If you want to know all the details of Gov. Jennifer Granholm's emergency surgery, you can find them below the fold...

From the governor's press office, which released the info this afternoon:

The surgical procedure performed to correct Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm’s intestinal obstruction is called a laparotomy, which refers to an incision made through the abdominal wall.

Sparrow Health System surgeon Timothy McKenna, DO, removed a short section of Granholm’s small intestine during a 90-minute surgery performed on April 29, 2008 at Sparrow Hospital.

This type of intestinal obstruction — likely the result of a complication from a surgery performed on Granholm in Washington, D.C. in 1993 — is seen in up to 10 percent of patients who have previously undergone abdominal surgery, according to Dr. McKenna.

Dr. McKenna, who joined Sparrow Health System in 1984, specializes in general surgery. He is a native of Lansing and a graduate of Michigan State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine.
