Court blocks measure that sought to overhaul it
File this under: We all saw this one coming. The Reform Michigan Government Now proposal was ruled unconstitutional by the Michigan Court of Appeals yesterday, one of the agencies it seeks to overhaul.
This was the sticky ground we all knew was coming. The proposal is so broad (indeed, that's why it was thrown out) that the only people standing in its way - the courts - are one of the many groups the proposal seeks to change.
At the COA level, there are seven judgeships marked for the cut. At the Supreme Court level, which the proposal will likely be appealed to, there are two.
I argued in a post a while back that state Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer's whole goal with this proposal was to a) get it on the ballot and pass it, thereby helping Democrats or b) force the Cliff Taylor-led court to block it, thereby providing Dems the ammunition they might need to get him booted by the voters this fall.
Looks like we'll see Option B. Though, as I said yesterday, it's hard to boot a judge without a candidate.
