With this year’s budget still in flux – a full month after the fiscal year started – Senate Republicans are pushing for reforms to deal with an expected crippling shortfall next year.
Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop said Thursday that Senate Republicans are preparing a package of bills to change how state and local government operate in an effort to save money, according to Gongwer News.
For now, he’s not offering details, but he said the ideas are drawn from several
areas, including the Michigan Chamber of Commerce and the Mackinac Center
Don’t expect tax increases to be a part of any reform package. Just this week, Senate Republicans shot down a proposed physician’s tax.
"Many of the savings are at the state level, but many of them are at the local level too, so we need to figure out ways to be more efficient with the money that we have," he said
