I’ve said it before in this blog. Michigan’s burgeoning medical marijuana
industry is an untapped goldmine for the state.
This week, the Detroit Free Press published a story on the
expanding industry for providing medical marijuana to those certified to use
it. Doctors are setting up clinics, and gardening supply shops are raking in
dollars by selling equipment to grow the green-leafed pharmaceutical.
In a state that has the nation’s worst unemployment, that’s
a good thing, right?
So far, Michigan
has taken a hands-off approach to medical marijuana, intervening only to the
extent of certifying eligible patients and growers. Why doesn’t the state more
closely regulate it – and also tax it?
Already, our education system receives much funding from a
state lottery system that preys on the hopes and dreams of an underclass who can’t
really afford to shell out the extra dollars for tickets.
Surely, we can stomach the thought of marijuana tax revenue
being used to buy books and computers for Little Jimmy in school.
