Governor-elect Rick Snyder has named Duane Berger as acting director for the Department of Human Services, but now the rumors are flying that state Supreme Court Justice Maura Corrigan may resign her post in coming weeks to take the job permanently
Why the delay? If Corrigan steps down to take a post before Saturday, Gov. Jennifer Granholm still has the chance to fill the Supreme Court appointment before she leaves the gubernatorial post.
Some may question whether Corrigan really would want to move from a Supreme Court justice to DHS head – a job that oversees an understaffed bureaucracy that often is highly criticized publicly when it fails to stop child abuse. Many would see it as a step down from a judgeship where she can leave a mighty thumbprint on state law.
Still, Corrigan has long been a key advocate for child welfare and foster care, and she has won numerous awards for her work in this field.
Corrigan has served on the court since 1998; her term expires in 2015.
