Ready-Made XMas
Being a human being, I get busy at the Holiday time along with thousands- probably millions- of other people. And, like most people, I appreciate certain inventions that can save me a little time and effort, like electricity and washing machines, which I gratefully utilize in between Holiday goings-on. But have our 'time-savers' turned into 'I-hardly-need-to-try-ers'?
Take cookies and pie crusts- once the guage of a woman's character was judged by her collection of hand-made cookies and pastries at this time of year, as homemade goods had such quality they were given as gifts. Now, Meijer sells rolls of plastic dough a person just cuts up or slaps in a pie tin- the only skill involved is turning the oven knob to 'on'.
Or what's up with these big, blow-up Christmas toys I see half-deflated in everyone's yards? Apparently the tradition of putting up strings of lights each Christmas has proven too much work for many, but lugging a 50-lb vinyl blow-up outdoors with a constantly-running electric motor isn't.
It just seems to me that some of the excitement over the Christmas season gets lost when we skip over things that might take a little work, but are classic staples of the holiday. My husband sums it up like this: "What, no one wants to freeze their buns off stapling lights to the house for hours? But that's what makes the hot chocolate taste so good when you come indoors!"
Well, you know, today's women may want their character judged on something more substantial than how good their cookies are.
