Time Warp
Isn't it funny how a song can transport you back in time? It could be a moment that is decades old, and suddenly it feels so close and familiar, it could have happened yesterday.
It happens to me a lot. This morning, I heard an old song that put me right back into the car of a group of friends, driving up MLK in the summer, windows down, punk music blasting out of the stereo. I felt the warm air in my face, the soft faded twill of my favorite khakis, the pill of my favorite second-hand shirt. It was a happy time for me, simpler, less worrisome.
Once that first memory hit me, it was like a cascade of every summer show I ever went to with friends, of all the silly stuff we did and wore, trying so hard to be cool and to impress each other. I was flooded with the remnants of a life that I of course took for granted at the time, and was simultaneously reminded of how damn fast everything seems to go in life sometimes. My husband, Jake, says, "Remember when we were kids and it seemed like Christmas took forever to get here?"
Yeah, I do. Now, I wish it could stretch it out a little- make it last a little longer and give me some time to catch my breath, maybe sing at the top of my voice with the windows down again (in warmer weather, of course!)
