Mysterious Citrus
I have this great book about produce that I've had for several years. I've pored over its pages of beautiful and bizarre fruits like Dragon Fruit and Durian, daydreaming about what a Westerner like me could do with such things. One of those bizarre fruits mentioned was Citron, or Buddha's Hand, and when I saw it for sale today at the ELFCO, I jumped at the chance to play with this mysterious citrus.
Used in Asian countries as an offering in Buddhist temples, this fascinating and folkloric fruit is cultivated in the same regions where it is most widely recognized- our cold U.S weather would never support it, like other citrus fruits. But occasionally, like today, we get a rare chance to experiment, which is what I plan to do.
Buddha's Hand has a sweet, strong citrus scent, like Meyer Lemons, and has an intense flavor obtained from the peel that I hope to turn into candied peel, use for garnish on pasta, and maybe flavor liquor with, if there's some left over. I find its place in mythology fascinating, and its appearance to be quite captivating. We shall see what unfolds over the next few days!
Too cold for citrus fruit in the US!? Texas grapefruits and oranges are deeeelicious. In fact, we're right in the middle of the season. Chris and I have been munching on TX grapefruits the past couple weeks.
