Cold As Ice

My sister-in-law is doing a local 'Polar Plunge' this weekend, and she suggested I try it, too, as all the proceeds are for a great cause- The Special Olympics. But even though this seemingly-absurd activity takes place in one of our most frigid months, the positive health effects are said to last years.

I did a little research, because quite frankly, I think jumping into water that is 40 degrees or less is absolutely crazy. I like the winter fine, but the simple thought of trying to warm up my feet after such a Just jump in! photo courtesy of www.meas.ncsu.edu stunt already has me reaching for my SmartWool and flannel. Turns out plunging has been claimed to increase mental alertness (really? by being thrown into icy water?) and improve circulation and breathing efficiency, among other benefits. I have no doubt those last two are true- once while in Texas I jumped into a natural spring, and the seemingly-balmy-in-comparison 63 degree water made me feel like I got a punch to the stomach, and I hyperventilated for about 5 minutes.

Do you take the plunge? Do you know someone who did? I'd love to hear about the experience. As for this Sunday's swim, I'll just stick a donation in the bin and watch from the sidelines.
