End-of-Winter Survival Tactics
Winter is like a long car trip. At first, it's exciting as you take in new surroundings, keeping busy as you prepare for coming events, and remark at how far you've traveled. A little after half-way, it gets a little tedious, but it is still easy to stay preoccupied and forget about the remaining distance. Then, in the last leg, it becomes nearly unbearable, and you just can't wait for it to be over.
With the string of tentative sunny days we've had in the Capital City lately, I can't help but yearn for Spring. Tulips and Daffodils started showing up in flower shops, and I've been reverting to my 'late winter survival' tactics to get through this last bit of Michigan's persistant winter.
I know it must be February if I crave fresh green things and citrus, so I've been eating a lot of Avocados,
Spinach, and bringing home Mineolas and Blood Oranges to quench my body's need for Vitamin C and Potassium. I've also been planning my summer garden adventures and picking out seeds to order for the quickly-approaching season. March is such a cruel month, offering us scattered days of Spring-like warmth, then punishing us with bitterly cold days that remind us of Winter's hold. But the end is near, and I can't wait.
