Starting at the Beginning
As I slowed to a walk for the third time during last weekend's Ele's Race, I was again reminded that all the runners and walkers on the sweltering course that day had a reason they were out there. Whatever the reason, we had all made a commitment, and that decision was what kept us moving forward. I thought about what motivates me...What keeps you moving forward?
A local Lansing woman, Lesha Broomesey, is trying out to become a competitor on the nationally-recognized show 'The Biggest Loser'. Broomesey is a heavy woman- there is no doubt about that, but instead of allowing her weight to continue to be an obstacle for her, she has chosen to go public with her struggle against obesity and commit to living a healthier life. It takes an iron will and more than a touch of bravery to make that comitment on its own- to announce it to the entire nation is an entirely different form of gutsy-ness.
You can support Lesha on her FaceBook page and by spreading the word to other people you know. She is a great example of one way our city and its residents can take a situation and flip it, change gears, and start heading forward towards our own goals instead of back-paddling or spinning our wheels in the same rut.
