Devil in the Details
If you are a runner, or if you know one well, we are a bit of a control-freak bunch, and as 2012 begins, all of us are hauling out our planners and starting to fill in the blanks of races we already know we want to run, arranging our lives tetris-style around training plans and goal events. I wanted to focus on quality, not quantity, for my 2012 races, so I started filling in blanks of my own.
The end of May holds my first half marathon, followed quickly by early June and my return to the world of triathlon, and the kickoff of the official triathlon season. July is quiet, so I'll be pushing at local 5K's for my Personal Record and beating my best 2011 times, and late that month I'll participate in a 5K as part of the Transplant Games, an olympic-styled sporting event for people who have recieved an organ transplant (I had a kidney transplant in 2009).
Early August I'll return to open-water swimming and look for a better time in Petoskey's 1-miler, leaving a few weeks to rest before I hit the road for the DALMAC, another dream of mine I anticipate attaining this summer. I'll wrap my season with my second half marathon, the Capital City River Run, and it will be Fall again! I must be crazy!
Turns out I'm just as Type A as the rest of those crazy runners, and somehow our bodies have been designed to thrive on stress to the body and adrenaline, so we keep returning to toe that start line, impatient for that fix. My hope is that with my new experience and knowledge, I can have a safe and fun season full of "firsts", and less training fatigue and stress, which all anyone hopes to find. Balance is key no matter what you do, whether its running or swimming or gardening or walking the dog.
