I've worked from home for a long while, picking up little odd jobs here and there, blogging, baking, and doing 'my own thing' to make ends meet. I got a dose of a "real job" this weekend as I got called in to work at the Playmaker's Sidewalk Sale, and was reminded of both what I love and hate about punching a clock.
First, if you live in the Lansing area and you don't know about the Sidewalk Sale, I'm interested to hear how you've managed to miss the television, radio, and billboard ads that have been circulating for weeks- this semi-annual sale is an event of Black Friday proportions, complete with lines outside the building and the occasional scuffle for a coveted item. I was ecstatic to be thrown into the fray for most of this past weekend, retreiving shoes and helping customers with a huge grin on my face. It was awesome to finally feel like I was doing something...I was helping!
But after 6 hours of helping, my feet ached and all the numbers on shoe boxes started to blend together- I forgot sizes and lost a few customers in the crowd, and I had to stop power walking so I could take a breather befpre I hit the sales floor again. I was getting tired! When I punched out on Saturday, the store was jammed with people, and I couldn't quite think straight- I watched the store's seasoned veterans of Sidewalk Sales past slide among the throngs with ease, using learned experience and saving precious energy so they could make it through the sotre's closing that night standing upright.
On my drive home I pondered the jealousy I encounter when people hear that I work for myself. They say 'oh, I wish I could make my own schedule' or 'it would be sweet to work in my pajamas'...I suppose being self-employed has its perks, but sometimes I wonder if it woiuld all be so much easier if I could just punch a time clock and get a check every week instead of scraping things together every month.
Very great idea.
