Thanks and giving.
In just a couple of days millions and millions of people will all celebrate a day of thanks and do it by giving. I am moved by the beauty of the simple act of opening the door to a home and filling it with people you love! Thanksgiving means many things to many people. To some it is a fleeting time to spend with those that they miss or the new arrivals to the world. Maybe it's even a chance to touch base with those who were there in the beginning of the traditions that seem to have become the cornerstone of the holidays.
The tables will be covered in hot delicious food. Drinks will glisten and dinnerware will shine. Smiles will adorn faces like well wishes attach to greetings and farewells.
Thanksgiving means a lot of things to a lot of people, but for me it means just one thing. That for one more year I have been touched by family and friends. The people I know have enriched my life in ways that are impossible to put into words. I will simply say that I am thankful for them and the day that is set aside to honor them and all of the other things that we are thankful for.
This year as a newly married man we are going to provide lunch instead of dinner. We will be flooding our table with different foods bought locally to continue to support Lansing and to really enjoy eating. Because we typically eat more organic and and non modified foods we go to places like Lansing City Market. It's great that we can get the meat and veggies we need to enhance or meal with a variety and still buy from local farmers. For some things that the market doesn't carry we go to Horrocks. Horrocks has some of their produce shipped in that aren't native to Michigan but all in all it is still supporting the Lansing area. Last but not least, there are times that we will also go to the Better Health Store for things like arnica to naturally help with bumps and bruises that tend to happen when moving furniture for large groups and Rescue Remedy which is a natural non drug way to deal with stress that sometimes happens when bringing large groups to a single home. And when we want to share a bottle of wine we always reach for those produced here in Michigan because it's not just the ones we love but they support us by providing us with a delicious treat to enjoy with lunch.
All in all there are ways to make the holidays better. Enjoying those around you help to make the seasons bright. And remembering those less fortunate can ensure that everyone have a Happy Thanksgiving. There are local stores and vendors that are willing be there for us as long as we need. Visit them and get what you need for your family and while your out get a non parishable item for someone elses. You can drop them off at many of the local shelters like the Lansing food bank, The city rescue mission of Lansing and many churches around town.
