News and Notes
Some speculation on the open Lansing Catholic and Carson City-Crystal football and Lakewood volleyball coaching jobs, this week's MHSAA local tv schedule, and a scholarship application link for high school seniors.
Who's next: The football positions at Lansing Catholic and Carson City-Crystal and volleyball job at Lakewood all have some intrigue.
Lakewood is the area's most successful volleyball program, and an annual Class B state contender. It's had four coaches this decade though, including program-builder Kellie Rowland. The one time Lakewood went outside its immediate community for a coach, there were problems and the coach left midseason. But there could still be some interesting candidates, especially with the school sitting between Grand Rapids and Lansing.
Lansing Catholic is prepping for a new football stadium in the near future and coming off a state championship in boys basketball, so there is a desire to win consistently now and probably at least a bit of pressure from recent success on the court. The Cougars had their best season in 12 in 2007 under Tony Costello, and it appears a string of 2-3 strong classes is on the way. But most athletic directors and coaches will say it's preferable to have a football coach who is in the building fulltime, and only one of Costello's staff was this past season. A job won't be created for the new coach, so the pool could include teachers/assistant coaches from other area schools.
Carson City-Crystal is an interesting situation because of the coaches it's lured recently -- first Devin Pringle back from Waverly, and then Terry Johnson after a great run at Ionia. The school has had success in other boys sports like basketball and wrestling, and according to some football people from that league improved in Johnson's second season.
MHSAA on Comcast this week: On Wednesday, Fowler boys basketball vs. Pewamo-Westphalia at the Holiday Hoops Invitational, 6:30 p.m., and Fowlerville at Lakewood wrestling, 10 a.m.
The 1998 Lower Peninsula wrestling individual finals -- featuring three Mason state champs -- will air at 3 p.m. both Wednesday and Saturday.
Got scholarships?: For the 12th year, the National Milk Mustache "got milk?" Campaign, along with USA Today, is giving out $7,500 scholarships to 25 high school seniors. Winners also will be recognized at a ceremony at Disney's Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Fla., and have their own "got milk?" ad in USA Today.
Applications are available at http://sammy.bodybymilk.com. Deadline is March 6.

Devin Pringle only used the job for a stepping stone for his career, changing the offensive around for one year, then took another job with-in the school. Its all about the kids right Devin.
