DeWitt offensive tackle Paul Jorgensen has selected a football future at Northwestern over one at Michigan State. And although it was surely a tough choice turning down his favorite team, it definitely was a sensible one in his case.
Jorgensen, at 6-foot-7 and nearly 280 pounds, could certainly fit into any offensive style. But his quick, agile feet -- helped by years on the basketball court as well -- is a great fit for blocking in open space that goes along with playing in Northwestern's spread. He'll have to gain some weight either way, and could have put on the 50 or so pounds for the straight-ahead blocking in a more conventional pro-set offense like Michigan State's -- but he isn't going wrong by making this pick. He'll likely end up around 300 for the Wildcats, and continue to showcase pass-blocking that has helped protect what should again be one of the area's top offenses this fall.
The upside for MSU and local high school programs is that the Spartans continued to go after the strongest local players. That wasn't always the recent case prior to Mark Dantonio's taking over, but they got Blake Treadwell from East Lansing and Micajah Reynolds from Sexton for this fall's freshman class, and will continue to have shots the next time DeWitt or anyone else locally rolls out a big-time prospect ... and not just because MSU is down the road.
