I'll try to update this again later this weekend since Williamston and Portland don't play until Saturday. But here are a few reactions to Friday's district finals.
The big three:
1. DeWitt 42, Sexton 14 -- DeWitt hadn't faced a Division I-caliber offensive star this season. Test passed. DeWitt hadn't been in a close game yet this season. Test passed.
2. Ithaca 50, Olivet 7 -- This helps paint a better picture of Ithaca's ability. The Yellowjackets obviously have a ton.
3. Holt 34, Howell 0 -- Bring on Rockford. Holt is as ready as possible for a rematch with its West Michigan rival.
Game ball: DeWitt's defense. The Panthers shut down Sexton running back Onaje Miller, holding him to 22 yards on 16 carries. He made a couple nice runs, but couldn't get much room to breathe. Any time he went right, DeWitt's Paul Jorgensen seemed to be there.
WOW factor: Ovid-Elsie 46, Durand 8. Anyone else get the feeling we might see the Marauders back at Ford Field in three weeks?
Upset central: None. If Ravenna beats Potterville on Saturday, that will qualify, although that also looks at this point like it could go either way.
Two more that caught my eye:
1. Jackson Lumen Christi 42, Stockbridge 14 -- Regardless of this, good for the Panthers, who finished 9-2 seemingly out of nowhere. Next year could be a big one too.
2. Beal City 25, Fulton 6 -- It was also a good run for the Pirates, who represented the CMAC well going 1-1 against ranked teams from the Mount Pleasant area in the playoffs.
Some final thoughts from the game I covered this week, Sexton at DeWitt
--DeWitt quarterback Jimmy Williams, in my mind, joined the ranks of DeWitt's elite quarterbacks in this one. He ran for two scores, threw for a third, and returned to the game after a knock to his elbow briefly numbed his arm. That might not sound like a big deal, but he's a gritty player and it shows multiple ways.
--It's hard to notice how good Paul Jorgensen is because most people don't spend a game watching the linemen. Well, take a few plays to do so. DeWitt has a number of good players at those spots, but Jorgensen simply dominates when teams try running to his side.
--DeWitt running back Nathan Deak impresses more every week. He's got some speed but even more strength. He doesn't have the huge numbers of some other backs, but he hasn't needed them. He does the job when it counts.
--Think about this: Deak, receiver Jordan Johnson, defensive backs Jacob and Caleb Higbie and defensive lineman Dylan Keener could all be considered DeWitt standouts, and none is a senior.
--Miller's troubles weren't as much about him as what he had to run into play after play. His best run was called back by a penalty, but he showed what he can do with even a little space. Sexton's line was young but had great moments, and it will give him more to work with next fall.
--Playing without injured standouts Vialy Lazarre and Jourdyn Thompson certainly didn't help the Big Reds. But senior linebacker E.J. Alexander and junior receiver DeAaron Williams did stick out in their absence.
--Talk about a team returning a bunch, few could have back as much talent as the Big Reds. Miller is a great one but he's not the only one. Anthony Goodman, Kyren Kemp and Greg Scott are a few other playmakers to remember.

Thank you for all the good press on the Big Reds and Greg Scott, he is one to watch.
