Olivet will move to Class B next school year in one of the more surprising area class switches in a few years. It should allow for some interesting possibilities.
Classes are used only for boys and girls basketball and volleyball these days. But seeing as Olivet had the No. 1 girls basketball team in Class C at the end of the regular season -- and will return some strong players to that team next year -- I'm curious to see what the Eagles will do in their district (think the one that usually includes Charlotte and schools on the southwest side of the area). Also, which Class C team will advance further thanks to eluding Olivet next season?
Also, with Maple Valley crossing into B for a school year a few back and Olivet now, think about this one: If the CAAC decides down the road to allow for realignment based on region in addition to the current enrollment standard, what about a division of Lakewood, Ionia, Portland, Charlotte, Maple Valley and Olivet. Just a thought ...
One more intriguing one from this announcement Tuesday -- Schools need just 967 students now for Class A and 468 for Class B. A year ago it was 987 and 488, respectively. Two years ago 1,017 and 498. Not a huge surprise, but there's a little shock value in those numbers, nonetheless.
