With so many area players announcing commitments Wednesday, we didn't have much room to go into detail on their respective accomplishments. Here's an expanded look at each of the four we mentioned briefly in today's paper.
Olivet's Kelsey Campbell to Northern Michigan
Olivet senior Kelsey Campbell has signed with Northern Michigan, becoming the second player from her high school team to sign with a Division II college program this month.
The 5-foot-6 guard averaged 13.2 points, 6.5 assists and 3.7 steals per game in earning a Class C all-state honorable mention this season. She was a four-year starter at point guard for the Eagles, who made the state semifinals in 2009 and were ranked No. 1 in Class C before falling for the second straight year to Flint Hamady, this time in the regional.
“I think she’ll bring an offensive mindset, the ability to create for herself when she needs to, (but) her main asset is creating for others,” Olivet coach Rob Fleming said. “I think that’s where she’ll really benefit her teammates at the college level.”
NMU finished 22-10 this season and qualified for the NCAA Division II Tournament. Last week, Olivet teammate Jackie Cousineau signed with Division II Urbana (Ohio).
DeWitt's Andrew Lerg to LCC
DeWitt's Andrew Lerg has committed to play for Lansing Community College next season.
The 5-foot-11 guard averaged 20.3 points per game as a senior and was a Class B all-state special mention.
"He grew up in our program," Stars coach Mike Ingram said. "He's been coming to our camps since he was young."
Lerg, who began his career with St. Johns before transferring to DeWitt for his final two years of high school, made 50 three-point field goals as a senior.
"He can really shoot," Ingram said. "I'd say he's one of the best in the area at shooting the ball."
Sexton's Marcus Cain to Cincinnati State Tech and CC
Sexton forward Marcus Cain has verbally committing to NJCAA Division II junior college Cincinnati State Technical and Community College.
Cain, at 6-4, played mostly power forward in averaging seven points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game and earning all-CAAC Red honorable mention this season. He’ll likely move to small forward.
“Marcus can do what a lot can’t do in that he can defend. He can guard one through three at that level,” Sexton coach Carlton Valentine said. “His best basketball could be ahead of him. In our system he had to play a four, so you might see his game blossom.”
Cain was on Sexton’s varsity for three seasons. Cincinnati State finished 27-9 and won the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference this season.
Everett's A'rielle Cannon to Oakland CC
Everett 5-9 senior A’rielle Cannon signed with Oakland Community College on Wednesday and will have an opportunity at point guard immediately as the Raiders replace a number of outgoing backcourt players.
She averaged 12 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game this winter in earning all-CAAC Blue honorable mention.
“We definitely feel she’s got the talent to do it. She’s going to have to step up her game a little bit to compete against larger, stronger guards she’s not likely facing in her high school conference, but I don’t see a problem with that at all,” OCC coach Marv Allen said. “With her size and ability, if she continues to improve her game, she’ll have a lot of (college coaches) looking for her.”
OCC, an NJCAA Division II school, finished 19-11 last season.
