There can’t be another college football coach who knows more about East Lansing seniors Spencer Treadwell and Tyler Tucker than newly-hired Miami of Ohio coach Don Treadwell.
On Wednesday, they became Don’s first recruits at his new school.
In the early afternoon, the former Michigan State assistant offered his son Spencer a scholarship. A few hours later, he got the commitment from Tucker.
Tucker was an all-state honorable mention linebacker this fall and Spencer Treadwell was an all-area selection at running back. Both had interest from other Mid-American Conference schools. But it’s fair to say they couldn’t have ended up in a more familiar situation.
“After he got the job, my dad said he was interested in me, very highly-interested actually,” Spencer Treadwell said. “He was looking for me to see if I could play there or not.
“It’s a cool thing to have my dad as a head coach. I was born there in Oxford, and it will be cool to go back to my hometown.”
The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Tucker had 60 tackles including 11 sacks as a senior, and also threw for 1,555 yards and 13 touchdowns at quarterback while rarely leaving the field. Treadwell, 5-10 and 190, led the team with 837 yards rushing and scored four times.
Don Treadwell was an assistant at MSU the last four seasons, and Spencer and Tucker have been close friends since the former moved to East Lansing. Don Treadwell was hired at Miami of Ohio on Dec. 31.
Tucker will be the second of his siblings to play at the Division I level – older sister Sami plays basketball at Milwaukee and with the rest of their family and East Lansing coach Bill Feraco provided Tyler with a great deal of guidance through the recruiting process, he said.
“When (Don Treadwell) got the call, I was waiting, just hoping that he would think enough of me to come recruit me,” Tucker said. “It makes me want to just prove him right, just show my talents, work that much harder.”
