This is the final installment of three comparing how our area sports stack up against each other when it comes to competing at the statewide level. Links to the first two installments are at the bottom of this post.
21. Girls cross country (0) -- Area teams have come close to titles three times with runner-up finishes, and regularly have some individual contenders.
22. Girls swimming and diving (0) -- Big stars like Kelsie Schooley, Amelia Marsh and Leigh Holmes have done some big things individually at the state level, although aside from Okemos teams have had a tougher time putting together enough to make a run as a whole.
23. Volleyball (0) -- Lakewood is regularly among the elite in Class B, and DeWitt, Okemos and Pewamo-Westphalia are among those who have had some strong moments as mid-Michigan looks to break in among the mostly Grand Rapids-area powerhouses.
24. Boys bowling (0) -- The boys have been a little slower than the girls in terms of breaking through from a team standpoint. But Mason's Travis Valentine beat Charlotte's Austin Landry for the Division 2 individual title in an all-area 2010 final, and Lansing Catholic's Jalen White also won an individual championship.
25. Boys lacrosse (0) -- Like girls lacrosse, this sport has completed just its seventh season. At one point pre-MHSAA, Waverly's boys were a state power. It's only a matter of time before an area team emerges, and Okemos and Holt have come closest so far.
26. Hockey (0) -- Unfortunately, this is a bit of a numbers game. Area programs have had to combine frequently to stay alive, although the scene has stabilized. Big-time programs east and west dominate, and the area hasn't played in a state final since 1976.
27. and 28. Boys and Girls skiing (0,0) -- Don't put much weight into these rankings; there is only one school with teams, Okemos, and the closest slopes are in Brighton. That said, the Okemos boys have had some statewide push the last few seasons.
