Okemos won the larger high school boys title at the MSU/Playmakers True Team Indoor Track Invitational. Read the story.

The Chiefs will continue to earn major points throughout the season from a talented group of seniors that include Ian Horne and Taylor Moton in the shot put, Ayrton Fineout in the pole vault and Denny Hodge in the long jump.

But fourth-place Grand Ledge showed it will be a force again because it did well in the sprints. Darryn Gorman won the 60-meter dash and was also part of the winning 800 (4x200) relay along with high jump champion Harris Edwards plus Connor Anderson and Luke Vasillion.

Defending Division 2 state champion East Lansing showed they still have some talent by winning the 1600 (4x400) relay. The relay was made up of Elijah Hamilton-Wray, Nicolas Pridnia, Lawrence Davis and Ronnie Russell.

In the larger school girls meet, Grand Ledge edged Okemos for the team title.

The Comets dominated the distance events. Krista Magness won the 1600, Allison Dible won the 3200, and Lindsey Orwat, Krista Magness, Christy Snelgrove and Hannah Orwat won the 3200 (4x800) relay.

Ayda Alavi won the 400 and Ashlynn Schiro the 60-meter hurdles for runner-up Okemos.

Fifth-place East Lansing won the 800 (4x200) relay with Essence Whitaker, Mikayla Pryor, Elizabeth Jones and Mercedes Lee.

Victoria Milton won the shot put and Chante Roberts won the 800 for eighth place Waverly, which also won the 1600 (4x400) relay.

Taryn King won the high jump and Katie Rehberger tied for first in the pole vault for 11th-place Haslett.

SMALLER SCHOOLS MEET

Third-place DeWitt won six girls events, but finished with 1127 points to Williamston's 1274 and Yale's 1159.

Josie Yesmunt won the 60-meter dash, Audrey Koenigsknecht the 400 and Kayla Hanses the 3200 for the Panthers -- which also finished first in the 800 (4x200), 1600 (4x400) and 3200 relays.

Williamston claimed the title thanks in part to 1600 champion Hannah Grischke and 60 hurdles champion Elizabeth Dutcher and shot put champion Tori Freeman and many other top finishes.

Michaila Lawcock won the pole vault for fifth-place Corunna, Rachelle Sandbrook won the high jump for sixth-place Ovid-Elsie, and Jasmine Holloway won the 800 for 12th-place Stockbridge.

Williamston also earned the boys team title among smaller high schools. Austin Loewen won the 60-meter hurdles, Jimmy Kodet tied for first in the high jump and the 1600 (4x400) and 3200 (4x800) relays both triumphed for the Hornets.

Fourth-place DeWitt won the 800 (4x200) relay, Garrett Reid won the long jump for fifth-place Maple Valley and Hunter Winans won the 400 for eighth-place Ovid-Elsie.

Evan Upshur won the 800 and Marcus Prigge tied for first in the high jump for 11th-place Stockbridge, and Adam Coon won the shot put for 13th-place Fowlerville.

Other teams have a better string of state championships in a certain number of years than Sexton's two straight boys basketball titles and three straight appeareances in the state championship game.

Even Sexton itself won two straight Class A titles in 1959 and 1960 under former coach Clayton Kowalk, the man for whom the court at Sexton's Carnegie Sports Arena court was named earlier in the 2011-12 season. (And Sexton assistant Chris Ferguson played on those teams.)

But the reason this one might be the best is because of talent and unselfishness.

I say talent because there may be 5 players who eventually make NCAA Division I schools when all is said and done. Denzel Valentine is headed for Michigan State, Anthony Clemmons for Iowa and Bryn Forbes for Cleveland State. But I bet junior center Jalen Hayes and 6-foot-9 freshman Trevor Manuel achieve that status as well once they graduate.

Lansing Eastern had Sam Vincent (Michigan State) and Robert Henderson (Michigan) in 1980, Waverly had Marcus Taylor (MSU) and Courtney Scott (Oakland) in 2000, Lansing Everett had Goran Suton (MSU) and Derick Nelson (Oakland) in 2004. But Sexton has two players going to Big Ten schools plus another who might have in Forbes if he had waited longer before committing to Cleveland State and maybe more depending on how Hayes and Manuel finish up high school.

And then there's the unselfishness aspect. I mentioned this in the state championship story I wrote.

Valentine's court vision and passing ability was compared to former MSU and Los Angeles Lakers NBA Hall of Famer Magic Johnson by  34th-year Detroit Country Day coach Kurt Keener after Sexton beat his team in the state semifinals. See state semifinal story. But Valentine can shoot as well, and could take over a game when his team need him to.

Clemmons sacrificed what could have been a more prominent role for the betterment of the Sexton team. Yet Sexton coach Carlton Valentine referred to him more than once as "a monster" when he would key a big run in a big game, including two runs in the semifinal win over Country Day.

Forbes was the team's best shooter, but I can't remember a basketball player I enjoyed watching drive to the basket more than I did Forbes. He would explode around a defender and just glide and elevate seeming effortlessly.

The way this team played together was clinical, textbook, and just picturesque.

That's why I think they're in the conversation when people talk about the best high school boys basektball teams ever.

Eight mid-Michigan area teams have advanced to Monday regional semifinals by winning district finals on Friday night.
But none will be playing at a site closer than Jackson.
In Class A, Okemos is at Portage Northern. Its starting time has been moved to 8 p.m. from the 6 p.m. time listed at first.
In Class B, Sexton and Stockbridge are at Jackson Lumen Christi, and Corunna is at Mount Morris.
In Class C, Pewamo-Westphalia is at Bronson, and Ithaca at Shelby. P-W's starting time has been moved to 6 p.m. from the 7:30 p.m. time listed at first.
In Class D, Fulton is at Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart and Lansing Christian at Morenci.

East Lansing and Holt continued their string of high school girls basketball district titles and regional appearances with victories in district finals on Friday night.
East Lansing upset Class A. No. 2 Waverly 57-53, and Holt edged Jackson 44-41 in overtime. Eaton Rapids, which defeated Willilamston, was also among the nine mid-Michigan area teams who advanced. Click on the links to read the stories. The Holt link includes a roundup of other district finals that included Mid-Michigan teams.

In regionals, honorable mention East Lansing will face Richland Gull Lake, and Holt meets No. 6 East Kentwood with the winners of those regional semifinals battling in a Thursday Class A regional final at DeWitt.

In Class B, No. 2 Portland will host No. 10 Grand Rapids Catholic Central in a semifinal and then maybe No. 7 Hudsonville Unity Christian if the Raiders make the final. Honorable mention and host Eaton Rapids goes against Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard and then maybe a Marshall team that sidelined Olivet. Corunna, if it could win a regional semifinal against Croswell-Lexington, might have to face No. 1 Goodrich at Carrollton.

In Class C, Pewamo-Westphalia will face No. 2 and unbeaten Concord at Vermontville Maple Valley, and Carson City-Crystal meets No. 1 and unbeaten Morley-Stanwood and then possibly No. 5 and unbeaten Kent City at Kent City.

In Class D, Portland St. Patrick meets honorable mention Wyoming West Michigan Lutheran and then possibly honorable mention Custer Mason County Eastern at Beal City. No. 8 Lansing Christian has no ranked teams awaiting it in the regional it is hosting.

Holt High School's hockey team advanced to today's 6:30 p.m. regional final against Grandville at Grandville's Georgetown Arena with pre-regional shutouts over Grand Ledge/Waverly on Monday and Kalamazoo Loy Norrix on Wednesday at Kalamazoo's Wings Stadium.

Then the Eastside Stars (East Lansing/Haslett/Williamston/Bath and maybe more) won 9-1 on Thursday night at Suburban Ice of East Lansing against the Capital Area Patriots, which is made up of players from Lansing Catholic and remnants of the former Mason/Eaton Rapids/Charlotte team. Eastside, which also won 5-3 on Tuesday against a DeWitt/St. Johns team that finished in third behind only Jackson Lumen Christi and Jackson United in the final CAAC standings.

Four girls and one boys teams who captured regional titles will be among those competing for bowling team state titles today at four sites.
The Charlotte girls and Ionia girls in Division 2, Ovid-Elsie girls in Division 3, and Ithaca girls and Pewamo-Westphalia boys all catured regional team titles last week Friday.
Also advancing as teams were the Mason and Owosso girls in D2, Corunna girls and boys plus Alma girls in D3, and the Portland St. Patrick girls, Pewamo-Westphalia girls and Ithaca boys in D4.
Among the area individual champions competing for singles titles on Saturday will be senior Allison Goodman of Waverly among Division 2 girls, senior Darren Zimmerman of Owosso among Division 2 boys and senior Farrand Schneider of Ithaca among Division 3 girls.

A total of 39 mid-Michigan area wrestlers won first-round matches on Thursday to advance to today's quarterfinals in the individual state finals at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

There were six who advanced in Division 1, 23 in Division 2, six in Division 3 and four in Division 4.

Adding the latest rankings in front of the competitive cheer teams who advanced to tonight's Division 1 and Saturday's Division 2-3-4 state finals at the DeltaPlex in Grand Rapids shows it's quite clear that those who rank the teams throughout the season are really good at picking the most talented teams.

There's only one team not ranked in the top 10 in each Division competing in the state finals, and most of those were ranked throughout the season but just not in the last poll on Feb. 13.
