Cake free, but winning anyway

Big Ten football will continue to be viewed as a second-rate BCS conference in 2009 (until the nonleague and bowl showings improve), but it hasn't taken long for the best collection of basketball coaches in the country to push their league toward the top.

Suton to Utah

Chris Solari again. Late night here, but MSU forward Goran Suton was drafted by the Utah Jazz in the second round with the 50th pick of the NBA draft. He's the first Spartan taken since the 2006 draft, when Shannon Brown (Cleveland), Maurice Ager (Dallas) and Paul Davis (L.A. Clippers) all were selected. Everett High product Suton also joins the list of former MSU-Lansing products taken in the draft that includes Waverly's Marcus Taylor (2002), Eastern's Sam Vincent (1985), Eastern's Jay Vincent (1981) and Everett's Earvin "Magic" Johnson (1979).

We're working on getting in touch with Goran. Stay tuned to greenandwhite.com for more info.

Blog hijack: Goran Suton/NBA draft

It's MSU women's beat writer Chris Solari here. With Joe Rexrode sunning himself on some beach (or maybe just lounging around his house) on vacation after his sister's wedding, we thought it'd be a good time to give you an NBA draft update heading into tonight's festivities.

Here's a story Joe did prior to his sojourn. I talked to a travel-weary Goran Suton yesterday afternoon, after his workout with Cleveland was canceled due to travel issues, and he sounded much like Drew Neitzel did last year - nervous, excited and ready to get this process over to focus on his basketball future.

Do you think Suton will get drafted tonight, and where do you think he'll land? What teams would the best fits for Marquise Gray, Idong Ibok and Travis Walton? And will Joe Rexrode ever update this blog again?

I can answer the last one - Joe will be back soon, I pinkie swear.

Rules changes that make sense

Well, two out of three anyway. We'll finally get rid of the charges directly under the basket (sorry floppers, you know who you are), and I think the free-throw change is a good one as well.
