MSU to Orlando
Again! That's quite unofficial, but I believe MSU will get a Capital One Bowl bid in light of Oregon's 65-38 rout of Oregon State.
To recap, Oregon State's loss clears the way for USC to win the Pac-10. Had Oregon State won the league, USC almost certainly would have gobbled up another BCS at-large bid. Now (as long as USC beats UCLA next week), the Trojans will be the Pac-10's only BCS invitee, and I'm fairly confident that Ohio State will get an at-large bid over Boise State.
That moves everyone up a spot, meaning MSU should play in the Capital One Bowl on Jan. 1 in Orlando, likely against Georgia (which lost to Georgia Tech on Saturday, by the way, and while talented is still one of the preseason's most overrated teams). And Iowa and Northwestern will fight it out for the Outback Bowl in Tampa.
For the record, I still think an early Outback deal would have been good for MSU, mostly to get a jump on travel and tickets. But apparently MSU's bottom line will be about $200,000 better off by going Cap One, and that's nothing to sneeze at in this climate.
So, more Mickey Mouse. Awesome.

Any chance of UCLA upsetting USC?
Also, can our D Line / LB's handle Moreno?

UCLA beat USC two years ago when USC was trying to get back to the national championship. Plus, USC has a recent tendency to blow easy games with big importance, including:
2008: Oregon State
2007: Stanford
2007: Oregon State
2006: UCLA
Arguable: 2005: Texas

very true, but I'm thinkin they already had they're unexplicable loss this year in oregon state, they filled their quota of one bad loss and should blow out ucla
Posted by: greenandwhite | November 30, 2008 at 02:40 AM
yeah, USC only is good for one screw up, so too bad for ucla

I think Joe is premature. While the 3 of the BCS at-large slots are going to be taken by the SEC, Big XII, and Utah the 4th is not automatically tOSU's.
Boise State is ahead of tOSU in the BCS standings and might be a very desirable team to face Utah in the Fiesta Bowl.
As for travel, if MSU is relegated to the Outback, holding plane tickets to Orlando isn't the worst thing in the world. Tampa is only a 90 minute drive.

bill:
i still think osu has the edge over boise state because of their large fan base, reputation, and tv market. i am not as confident as i was last week because of boise state's blowout win against fresno state (61-10).
if msu gets the capital one bowl it will be sweet. more people will watch the game because of the better start time, better opponent (georgia), and the because it is on abc instead of cable.
as far as msu's bottom line i believe it would also improve by another $1 million because of the second big ten team making it into the bcs. (17 million - traveling costs of osu / 11 big ten teams)

The "Federal Bailout Bowl" in Orlando vs the "Overweight American Bowl" in Tampa. We can't go wrong with either. Although, most fans will have their fat butts on the couch, nursing a hangover, clicker in hand, and will switch to the "Real Housewives of Atlanta" New Years Day Marathon at the first commercial break, get sucked in and never return to the game. So why argue over which will get higher viewership. Hopefully, most of our potential defensive recruits will miss the game because they will be in the weight room getting stronger so that we can stop PJ Hill next year.

Perhaps you are correct xwing, but Joe is premature to declare it.
Oh and Bibba, Capitol One has not recieved bailout money. They don't do mortgages. They do credit cards and are doing quite well with their exorbitant rates.

Ohio State will not get the BCS bid. I am not sure how many times this needs to be explained.
No one wants to see the Buckeyes in the BCS again, except the Buckeyes. I don't think the BCS will risk more legal action by denying Boise State their earned spot in the BCS.

I still believe that if Florida loses to Alabama they should be behind OSU because of their loss to an unranked team. Not that I think they will actually lose the game, however.

First I just want to popint out that I am not "Big Ten Bill"
Second, since Boise is a member of the NCAA and signed off on the last lawsuit, what grounds do you think they will have for filing a new one?
When you answer please keep in mind and address the concept that since the BCS is worth millions, it will cost them very little to have one of their attorneys get a demurrer if the lawsuit is found to be baseless.

Bill,
Capital One is involved in all aspects of making money by exploiting the american consumer and capital markets, including home loans.

They will benefit both directly and indirectly from the federal bailout.
Posted by: Bubba | November 30, 2008 at 10:08 AM
Benefitting from a bailout is alot different than getting one.
Posted by: Bill | November 30, 2008 at 10:26 AM
I wish bubba was nursing a hangover with cliker in hand instead of in front of his computer! Let's all follow his lead and be angry about a team that overachieved to go 9-3.
While I would love to be 12-0 and playing for the national title we just are not there YET!!! The program is moving in the right direction at a faster than can be expected rate. Winning expectations are great, but belittling this team and this bowl is redicules!

Bill,
Either way, we are the ones paying for the federal bailout created by sub-prime lending practices of predatory banks, and Capital One has blood all over their hands both in their mortgage lending practices (before they were forced by some smart investors to sell off the sub-prime mortgage program in 2007 before the s**t hit the fan) and in their targeting of credit cards to people who are already in financial trouble. I would argue that Capital One is among the worst of these despicable lenders. What's in your wallet?

Psyc
Making fun of the bowl is not making fun of the team. It is remarkable that we are 9-3 given the talent we have. Coach D did a wonderful job with the players JLS left him.
I think we will be in contention for a Rose Bowl sometime in the near future! That is why I don't think there is any reason to debate which of these crummy second tier bowls is better. I will be in Florida over New Years to attend whichever game the Spartans get into.
Posted by: Bubba | November 30, 2008 at 10:59 AM
I don't carry their cards either. I am no big fan of theirs, I carry AMEX (the Costco version) and a VISA from my Credit Union.
I never said they aren;t scum, I just said they aren't as scummy as the banks in automakers that are panhandling congress for bailout money.

That d@#med Poll pop up message is back!

CapOne received over 3.55 Billion from the TARP http://perotcharts.com/2008/11/tarp-troubled-asset-relief-program-or-wall-street-feeding-frenzy/
I worked there and you don't realize half the truth of how these companies make and manipulate money.
So, who has done better? Kelly with mostly Dantonio recruits or Dantonio with JLS recruits? Will Cincinatti get a bigger bang for their buck with K or MSU with D?

Come on down - there is no snow
Posted by: Spartan in St Augustine | November 30, 2008 at 12:27 PM
Good question CS, Kelly has done exceptionally well at every level of competition. Now he's doing it with Coach Dantonio's recruits. Which tells us Cocah D can recruit winners and get the most out of the JLS the attrition recruits .
Funny how Kelly's been dropped from the top of the Tenn search list, again... not an unfamilar position after the MSU, UM and now UT openings?
If UCLA shocks USC ( as likely as FRED saying something positive ) and Saban's convicts lose big, how will that affect the SEC psecking order?
GO Green,

Bubba's references to couch potatoism and predatory leanding, while plenty far afield from football, are hardly falsehoods. Every day I marvel, looking back at photos of such physically healthy Americans as recently as the 80s, at how much we've thrown away for "entertainment" as in slime-enveloped stuff like Orange County something housewives. I actually find it refreshing that our physical self-destruction with snarfing chips, living seated in front of video games, and twisting our kids brains with Orange County or Atlanta big-fake-boobed and plastic-faced twisted narcissism is being challenged at long last. All as we laugh our way to a diabetic economic collapse...or not if we choose to wake up. It's a simple question: Do we have the brains and cojones to take the kids and spouces for a daily walk in the park, or will we follow TV like 300 million sheep into an early demise?
OK, back to the bowl game: I'm feeling less concerned about playing a Georgia or LSU or Ole Miss in Cap One since clearly none is an OSU or PSU. Go Green!

I, for one, have no desire to see MSU get pasted by 30 points in the Capital One Bowl.
The Outback Bowl was our best shot to get to 10 wins this year. Since Georgia lost yesterday, they're going to lay the wood to Michigan State in the bowl game.
It ain't going to be pretty, people.
Posted by: Fred | November 30, 2008 at 01:02 PM
That is a remarkably lame way to avoid saying that accepting the Outback Bowl now would have been a mistake. We could have really gotten a jump on travel and tickets by accepting an ever lower bid a few weeks ago.
Posted by: Scott | November 30, 2008 at 01:18 PM
We will watch the game on TV this year. We were in Orlando for The Champs Bowl last year. A run down stadium in a run down, very dangerous neighborhood. Go Spartans!
