Does anyone want this thing?
That is, Big Ten player of the year. Talor Battle and Evan Turner traded subpar games in a head-to-head meeting Tuesday. Kalin Lucas responded with a season-low four points against Iowa, the team he scorched for 24 a month ago.
If those guys don't watch out, Purdue's JaJuan Johnson is going to steal this thing. As for Lucas tonight, it was obvious that Iowa was giving him the ole "six eyes" treatment, and to his credit he didn't force anything. He had six assists, getting teammates involved. Still, he and everyone in white other than Delvon Roe and Korie Lucious did not look aggressive enough.
MSU appears miles away from its best offensive basketball, although the emphasis on going inside is a positive development. Roe just looks better and better. But the timing and chemistry are off. The Spartans needed to work some things out with Raymar Morgan in this game, and although he looked fresher and said his wind was much better, foul trouble helped keep him to 18 minutes.
And they just aren't in sync. Not that Iowa doesn't deserve some credit for making things tough.
Durrell Summers is the latest guy to take a hit, spraining his left ankle in the first half. He said in the locker room that it feels fine and he doesn't expect to miss any time. Tom Izzo said the upcoming two games in three days helped convince him to play cautious with Summers.
Will they ever all play? Will they ever all play well together? Will the Big Ten discontinue POY for a year? Stay tuned.
