Basically, everyone was pretty close (except Skiles). That definitely doesn't happen every year. As an added bonus, here's the top 25 I threw out in mid-June after all underclassmen decisions were made. Some good picks (UNC, MSU) and some bad (UCLA No. 2? Georgetown. ND was lower than in any other poll, but still way too high).
2008-09 top 25
1. North Carolina
:
With Ty Lawson, Danny Green and Wayne Ellington coming back (Lawson is the
shocker), along with Player of the Century Tyler Hansbrough, this isn’t even
close. It’s the most obvious and emphatic No. 1 that I can recall since UNLV
set out to repeat in 1990-91. These guys have everything, including the
experience of getting to and losing in the Final Four. They could go
undefeated. If they don’t, a trip to Cameron Indoor or one of three potential
games at Ford Field could be the stumble.
2. UCLA: Kevin Love, Russell Westbrook and -- for some odd
reason – Luc Richard Mbah a Moute are gone early, but Darren Collison and Josh
Shipp decided to return. This team still has forward Alfred Aboya and perhaps
the best freshman class in America
– led by super guard Jrue Holiday and big men J’Mison Morgan and Drew Gordon.
Factor in Ben Howland and the Bruins seem like the best bet for No. 2. But it’s
a long, steep drop from UNC to here.
3. Louisville
:
The first of a boatload of top-notch Big East teams, I put the Cardinals here
despite the considerable loss of David Padgett. Derrick Caracter is leaving
too, deciding to transfer, but that may be not be such a bad thing. Earl Clark
decided to return, and he’s on a loaded roster that still includes Terrence
Williams and Edgar Sosa. Freshman big man Samardo Samuels is supposed to be an
immediate star, so Pitino’s crew looks tough.
4. Michigan
State
: Sorry, I can’t put
this team any lower when considering the rest of the field and at the Spartans’
on-paper potential. For the record (this will be milked for all it’s worth and
then some), I predicted last season’s team to go 27-10 and get to the Sweet
Sixteen. I think this one can be much better than that, despite the departing
Drews. Finishing the season in Detroit
is absolutely realistic for Tom Izzo’s team. However, this does not mean I’m
picking MSU to win the Big Ten. I’ve learned my lesson on that more than once.
5. Pittsburgh
:
Might the Panthers get a rematch with the Spartans, deeper into March? With Sam
Young and DeJuan Blair in the frontcourt, and Levance Fields driving the ship,
this team looks like a contender. The loss of Ronald Ramon will be felt,
though.
6. Connecticut
:
Hasheem Thabeet is back, much to my surprise, so the Huskies will have their
best team in a few years. A.J. Price and Jerome Dyson make up strong backcourt,
and ninth-year senior Jeff Adrien is the glue guy. Big-time freshmen on the
way, too.
7. Marquette
:
Yes, that’s three Big East teams in a row – and four in the top seven. This
league is sick. You have to like this team’s chances with the backcourt trio of
James-McNeal-Matthews back for another run. The unknown is just how much the
loss of Tom Crean will hurt in the short term.
8. Gonzaga: Jeremy Pargo returning makes this team the best
from Spokane
in
some time, probably since he was a freshman and Adam Morrison scored 84 points
a game. Matt Bouldin should be ready to become “the next Morrison” this season.
9. Texas
:
I still think this team is very good. Yes, D.J. Augustin is gone as expected,
but gunner A.J. Abrams is coming back. I don’t know how he could have even
thought about leaving. Damion James is a beast and Gary Johnson is ready to
blow up. The class of the Big 12 this season.
10. Duke: I suppose you have to put the Blue Devils in the
top 10, with more major recruits on the way and Henderson
, Scheyer, Paulus, Singler back. But
I still don’t love them.
11. Arizona
:
Chase Budinger returning is worth about 15 spots to this team. He’s that good.
Brandon Jennings is coming in to help them forget about Jaryd Bayless. It’s UCLA-Zona
at the top of the Pac-10, as it should be.
12. Georgetown
:
I still think the Hoyas can be very, very good. I don’t think they’ll miss Roy
Hibbert as much as people think. Jeff Green was a bigger void last season than
Hibbert will be this year. Dajuan Summers just keeps getting better, there’s
tons of perimeter talent, and freshman big man Greg Monroe will be a more
dynamic force on the block than Hibbert. That’s five of 12 for the Big East.
13. Purdue: This might seem low, but I think Scott Martin is
a big loss, a guy who could have been a star. Robbie Hummel and E’Twaun Moore
are studs, and I think JaJuan Johnson could take a giant step if he puts on
weight. Chris Kramer is as tough as it gets. But the Boilers will find life a
lot different with expectations surrounding them from day one.
14. Memphis
:
It’s pretty impressive to lose two players like Derrick Rose and CDR and still
land here. But Robert Dozier and Co.
are
talented, and Tyreke Evans is the next elite recruit for John Calipari.
15. Notre Dame: Here’s No. 6 for the Big East. Some people
think the Irish can win the Big East. I think those people are high. Saw them
up close in Denver
and I’m still waiting for them to play some defense. But Luke Harangody is a
freak and he has a lot of help.
16. Tennessee
:
Heavy losses, a painful one with Ramar Smith booted off the team. Chris Lofton
and Jajuan Smith were seniors. But Bruce Pearl still has lots of talent – frosh
Emmanuel Negedu should help right away -- and a style of play that will allow
the Vols to keep winning big. Tyler Smith is the man now.
17. Miami
:
Ever heard of Jack McClinton? You should have, especially after the ‘Canes
nearly toppled Texas
in the tourney. He’s back, as is just about everyone from an explosive team –
the third best in what appears to be a watered-down ACC.
18. Kansas
:
The defending national champs lost just about everyone. Rush, Chalmers, Arthur,
Kaun, Jackson, Robinson. Ouch. But you know what? Sherron Collins will be a
star. (Collins. vs. Kalin Lucas at Breslin on Jan. 10 should be quite a show). Cole
Aldrich can be a star. The recruiting class is loaded to the max. The Jayhawks
will be dangerous and the second-best team in the Big 12.
19. Syracuse
: Donte Green is gone,
but Johnny Flynn and Paul Harris are back, while Bay City
’s own Eric Devendorf is back from a
knee injury. The Orangemen return to relevance. The Big East, once again, is
just ridiculous. That’s seven of the top 19.
20. Arizona
State
. Meanwhile, how
down is the Pac-10, everyone’s darling a year ago? This looks like the
third-best team with James Harden, a star no one knows, and one of the
underrated coaches in the game in Herb Sendek.
21. Davidson. Really, I wanted to put this team higher, on
Stephen Curry alone. But the other stud guard, Jason Richards, is gone, so no
top 15 for these guys.
22. Wisconsin
:
No way I’m leaving Bo Ryan out of the top 25. I actually think the Badgers can be
better than this, because Landry and Krabbenhoft are outstanding, and Trevon
Hughes is the real thing. Butch and Flowers are big losses, but this team has
depth and some youngsters ready to emerge.
23. West Virginia
:
Joe Alexander’s early departure drops this team from sure spot in the top 10.
But the Mountaineers still have good talent and good old Huggy Bear. They may
be No. 8 in the Big East, but that’s easily good enough for an NCAA bid this
year.
24. Florida
:
Nick Calathes and more talented freshmen will help the Gators move back to
respectability. Billy Donovan brings in five recruits, with three bigs
including Eloy Vargas. This is just the second SEC team in the poll.
25. Ohio
State
: And Florida’s 2007
title-game combatant gets the final spot. For the third straight year, Ohio
State
will welcome a one-and-done, lottery-bound big man. Some think B.J. Mullens
could be the No. 1 pick. If he’s that good, this team could surprise. Evan
Turner will take a big step. Jamar Butler’s loss is huge, but look for Mott CC
point guard Jeremie Simmons to make a difference. Flint
’s Noopy Crater is coming, too, although
he has work to do on his game. Wing William Buford will have the most freshman
impact other than Mullens.
