Checking in on MSU hoops

It's been two months since that surreal weekend in Detroit, and it's five months from the start of the 2009-10 season. In a couple weeks, all of next season's players will be able to work out together.

Chris Allen and Korie Lucious are soon to be fully cleared, and MSU's freshman big men will be mixing it up with the returnees. Here's an update from Tom Izzo on recent developments. He seems pretty encouraged by Herzog's offseason to date, and it's no secret that it's an important offseason for him.
I also found it interesting that Izzo mentioned the 30 minutes between Herzog and the two freshmen. I still think it's possible that Nix redshirts (I expect Sherman to be in the rotation), but it's great to have depth up front, and this team lost three bigs.
Just think if Draymond Green redshirted last season, as many expected. No way that team reaches the Final Four. And remember, he played sparingly until the Morgan illness. As much as MSU would like a fifth-year Nix in 2013-14, a few minutes from him next season could make a difference for a team that has a chance to do big things -- and MSU might end up with two bigs in 2010 if Jon Horford joins Alex Gauna.
That will be interesting to watch, along with so many other things. Lucas assuming more of a leadership role, Roe's explosiveness, Morgan's skills, Summers and Allen striving for consistency. Lucious looking to take the next step, and Austin Thornton looking to take some of the minutes vacated by Walton. And if Green really gets in shape, watch out. We'll check on how everyone has changed next month. This is a critical time of year for college basketball teams.
