As reported here first by LSJ prep editor Geoff Kimmerly, DeWitt offensive lineman Paul Jorgensen has picked Northwestern over MSU and several other offers.
So you have an Ann Arbor-area kid choosing MSU one day, then a Lansing-area kid choosing a different Big Ten school the next.
This follows an interesting conversation I recently had. If you were buying Big Ten stock right now, where would you invest? MSU is widely regarded as one of the league's fast risers, but I think Northwestern -- as long as Pat Fitzgerald plans to say -- is an attractive commodity as well.

Play cousins and be done wit it

N'western always has "potential" but typically it goes unrealized. Acadamic restrictions will never allow them to compete for sustained period of time.
Michigan, Iowa and Wisconsin are teams on the decline. Sell! Sell!
Minnehaha, Indiana and PU stink...always have, always will.
Illinois is a red herring. They appear to have had success in the past but they really haven't had any.
Ohio State would very expensive and might be over-valued right now. Think about going short.
The only other program to invest in right now is Penn State. They should be valued higher than MSU but still has a significant upside probability.
At the end of the day, MSU has the best value and most upside of any program in the BigTen.
But judging from that necklace hanging around your girlfriend's neck I'd say you better hang onto your money because you're going to need every penny of it just to keep her happy.

Fitz could end up being the next guy at ND. I'd buy stock in NW because they have a solid staff and good leadership. Only other Big 10 team I see rising a bunch is MSU, though I would expect the Sen. to pick up another NC at tOSU before he's done.
I'd sell Wisconsin, they've seen their modern day peak and are going to start to slip quickly. I'd also sell Michigan as the DR project will keep slipping away. You just can't go against such and est'd identity like the Blue had. It'll never work.

Northwestern is corrupt!
It all makes sense...Derrick Rose is from Chicago...then Blagojevich the gov'ner...now Paul Jorgywhatever goes to NW.

Indiana, Minny, and Purdon't haven't always sucked

That Illinois corruption comment is really funny....M State is the Truth.....

I still think we should have hired Brian Kelly. Give Kelly an entire walk on team and he can make them all winners. He somehow can motivate his players to be better than they think. They always end up winning.
Dantonio, well, I simply think he is just a coach and not a motivator like Izzo or Kelly.
I'm still wishing the best though for MSU.

enreek eh. stick to the singing bud. i was once of your school of thought...2 freakin years ago! but come on, how can you look at the turnaround in the past two years and still want Kelly. i am not sure how well Cincy is doing but any initial success there has to be partially credited to Dantonio. those were his players. now he is bringing the best stock of Talent to MSU since Saban. the best part (and least reported by the LSJ) is that he has gone on record calling MSU his final stop. i know i know we hear that from a lot of coaches *cough* Saban. but still Coach D builds himself on integrity. he was even honest that there is only one job he would leave for and thats OSU. but Tressel is going to stick around for a while and by that point MSU could be well established enough that a coaching change wont have the damaging effect that it did back in 2000. its been a long time since i have been this excited for MSU football. even if we take a step back and only win 7 or 8 games i am very happy with overall progress of this program and i think most fans would agree with that.

Hmm... I'm tempted to buy before Sultan Obama takes all of my money, but I guess the capital (offensive yardage?) gains will get me either way. Sell: UM, MN, IU, W, Ill, PU. Buy: PSU, OSU, NW, IA, and... MSU! Mark Hollis is my portfolio manager...

In this market always look for slow but steady growth. UoM coaching has shown themselves subject to instability and skepticism from their pundits. Look for a change in the CEO...
Wis,PU,IU,Ill, Minn stocks are being bought and sold with questionable stability management and in personnel. OSU, PSU, IA, NW spreadsheets are looking strong and capable. A watch on NW is in in order... as coaching and employees are coming together...CEO likely will be a target for outside corporate advancement.
MSU has shown steady growth and improvement, a stable board and CEO are being noticed by potential personnel. Dividend reinvestment is recommended.....

I think we're watching the UofM bubble burst, so if you haven't already dumped that stock better do so immediately before its completely worthless. NW is a risky venture, with lots of volatility, so try to buy low and predict the peak before the next plummet. OSU is always a safe bet.
But the smart money is on MSU. 2 years of steady growth after years of volatility. A new CEO with a clear vision and market discipline. It will continue to rise over the next several years, so buy buy buy

Keep things in perspective. Right now MSU is trying to pass Wisconsin and Iowa. That is step one.
Step two will be to really be competitive with Ohio State.
Michigan and PSU will normally be in the mix.
MSU came close last year. We know that we played PSU and OSU very tough in 2007.

I get depressed when people talk about stocks.
Can't we just talk football?

Sdp000,
DUH! Take a pill!

UM could be an attractive buy depending on what kind of beating the price took in the last 2 years. They are an historic program and they will rise again, although I can't say I look forward to it.
Buy BIG on MSU. I bet on MSU in the NCAA tournament and they hooked me up. I'm reinvesting my dividends!
I like NW for a short term play, but long term they won't hold it together.
Ill is the other program that is probably undervalued right now, but their long term prospects are much more uncertain than MSU or NW, meaning they could go either way.
Posted by: Laconophilia | July 02, 2009 at 01:40 PM
I mean NW has 3 Big Ten titles in the 14 years...MSU has 0, that's right 0!! NW has had more football success than MSU since 1990. Case closed!
