McNeill to Dantonio: "Wow"

"And he said 'Wow' back," Ruffin McNeill related of a Tuesday night conversation he had with Mark Dantonio.

    McNeill: "We've both had a tough month."
    Dantonio: "Yep."
    McNeill, Texas Tech's interim coach, told us about that conversation a few moments ago at a press conference at the Marriott Riverwalk in San Antonio. A strange, ugly turn of events at Texas Tech was allayed briefly by 30 minutes of public speaking from the Red Raiders' engaging defensive coordinator.
    This was part reaction to the Mike Leach firing, part calming of an infuriated fan base, part job interview. Based on what I saw, this guy is a serious candidate for it.
    Also, when you consider some of the player comments ripping Leach, and the fact that McNeill has been the good cop to Leach's bad cop (or warden) on this staff, I'm thinking less that the Red Raiders will be too downtrodden to compete Saturday night. And more that they'll be jacked to the Alamodome roof. We shall see.
