Friday surgery for Byrd

We interrupt this agonizing wait (46 1/2 hours until kickoff!) to bring you some news from the MASH basketball team. The left foot Russell Byrd broke over the summer has not healed fully and will require another surgery on Friday, MSU spokesman Matt Larson said. Byrd's expected time off is eight to 10 weeks.

Byrd was a redshirt candidate anyway for the 2010-11 season, considering the foot and the time he missed and the depth on MSU's perimeter (even with Chris Allen off to Iowa State). His 6-8 frame and accurate jump shot gave him a chance, but now I think you can pretty much count on seeing him as a redshirt freshman in 2011-12.
