I’ve heard Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero called many things, but never “a true gentleman.”
Until now.
On Sunday I got an e-mail from Rick and Sue Gyebnar of Delta Township in which they described a weekend encounter with Hizzoner.
The Gyebnars were participating in their church’s scavenger hunt. You know — the kind of ordeal in which participants have to come up with weird things, one of which was …
No, not a lock of the mayor’s hair.
No, not a photo of Virg hugging Carol Wood.
What the hunters needed was a photo of themselves — along with somebody they didn’t know — forming the “YMCA” letters with their arms.
Well, the scavengers were in a local Chinese restaurant picking up some of the other things on their list when one of them noticed Bernero at a nearby table. They asked the mayor if he would be their fourth letter.
“Surprisingly, he agreed,” the Gyebnars wrote. “He was very friendly and seemed to enjoy the experience. You can only imagine the reaction we got when our photo was shown on the big screen back at the church. All positive, of course." It was, after all, a church.
The Gyebnars added: “Virg is a true gentleman.”
