So, both chambers of the state legislature have officially endorsed the concept that it’s OK to text while you’re driving, as long as you’re not committing another offense in the process.
And they call that a step forward.
For one thing, this half-baked measure can’t be enforced. OK — Let’s think about this …
A cop pulls you over for, say, speeding, and, in the process, sees you fiddling with your phone. How could he possibly prove you were texting, instead of simply punching in a phone number, which is likely to remain very much legal?
Obviously the only sane approach is to take phones away from drivers. Entirely.
