Our fair state, as you may have read on today’s front page, is too fat. Nearly 30 percent of Michigan adults are obese.
A likely cause: incomes are down and bad calories are cheap.
Need some research to back that up? OK — go to any fast-food joint and check out the fat and sugar you can by for five bucks. Then go to the produce section of a grocery store and see how much fruit and vegetables your $5 will buy.
The fact is that healthy eating — the kind that promotes weight control — is a luxury many people can’t afford.
When highly processed food is cheaper than raw, natural food, something is out of whack.
