Regarding the proposed mosque/Islamic community center near Ground Zero in NYC, personally, I would burst with pride to be a citizen of a country that would accept — if not embrace — the project.
Especially — ESPECIALLY — because, at gut level, it feels like a slap in the face.
Remember, it’s our Constitutional protections that make this country great. Freedom isn’t always pretty; it’s not always convenient, or comfortable. But it is the very essence of what we are.
I regret that, according to pollsters, the majority of Americans would suspend freedom in this particular case. But I trust that the Constitution will, as it must, triumph over emotion.
