Me? On the rare occasions when I have to fill the larder, I look at it the same way I look at removing a sliver; I grit my teeth and get it over with as quickly as possible.
But as Lynne Ruetenik of Holt sees it, she isn’t just losing a store; she’s being deprived of a social opportunity.
In a recent e-mail to me Ruetenik wrote:
“When I first moved here in l995, I was looking for a grocery store. In Georgia I shopped at the Piggly Wiggly — a small store, with friendly staff.
“When I started going to L&L, I found that again — a small store, with a friendly staff … I was never too crowded, and so I could wander the aisles. Soon, I began to know the clerks, and the baggers, and they used to kid me that they would put a bed in the back for me, since I was there so much. Once I was even invited to one of their Christmas parties …
“So, it is with great sadness that I learned L&L would be closing Thursday. The staff members have been giving me good-bye hugs.
“There will never be another L&L, and it’s been a wonderful place to go for me. So, farewell to a local store that has served it’s customers well. You will be missed.”
