I’m not a gun nut. Honest! I own rifles and shotguns. But to me, guns are purely a means by which to hunt.
So, I feel a little uncomfortable saying this, but the existence of gun-free zones flies in the face of logic.
State Sen. Mike Green, a Republican from Mayville, has introduced legislation that would eliminate gun-free zones — schools, hospitals, day care centers, churches, casinos …
Now, the obvious reaction to that is big gasp. Guns in churches??!! Guns in day-care center??!! Oh, dear!!
But if you accept the principle of carrying concealed weapons — i.e., they’re instruments of personal protection — then why should people be LESS protected in some places, than in others?
You can make a logical argument that concealed weapons should be allowed only in rare cases, and I might agree with you. But that floodgate opened long ago, and gun-free zones are a half-cocked, hollow-point public-relations gesture.
