The story of $2 million lottery winner Leroy Fick continuing to use his Bridge Card — with the blessing of the state Department of Human Services — is rich on so many levels I hardly know where to start.
Fick, of Auburn Hills, won the $2 million in the state’s “Make Me Rich!” game in June. He claims that, after taxes, he took home “only” $850,000, but I don’t understand that math.
Anyway, some highlights from the episode:
- According to Fick, the Lottery folks knew he was getting food assistance and the DHS people knew had won the lottery.
- Fick’s case was recently reviewed and his eligibility, confirmed.
- DHS spokeswoman Gisgie Gendreau said that, under federal guidelines, lump-sum payments are not considered income for purposes of eligibility.
Say WHAT????
- Fick told reporters: “If you’re going to … try to make me feel bad, you aren’t going to do it.”
