Meaghan Scullion wrote to say that her boyfriend caught a chronic petty thief in the act early Wednesday morning near their north Lansing home, and chased him down — all for naught.
Scullion wrote: “We called the police, and when an officer showed up we were told that she was the ONLY officer to cover the entire north end. At that point we were told that she would drive down and see if she could spot him anywhere, but she would not stop to file a report, or do any sort of unless we could find that something was missing. Since he was caught red-handed, he didn’t have time to steal anything this time, so basically nothing was done.”
Scullion didn’t blame the cops; she blamed her fellow taxpayers. She wrote:
“I am absolutely furious that the millage to cover the deficit in emergency services failed because people were only concerned about the money, and did not think ahead about what would happen to an already increasing crime rate with less officers on the force.
“I for one do not feel any safer in my bed because I can save a few hundred bucks a year.
“I run the Hungry Howie’s Pizza on Waverly Road; my store has been robbed three times since I took over, and all of my managers, including myself, have had guns stuck in our face.
“Perhaps if the people (who voted against the millage) had been robbed at gunpoint as I have, they might have passed the millage and we could all sleep a little easier at night.”
