There it is again — in an Associated Press story about a speech Gov. Rick Snyder was to deliver Wednesday: “The tax switch is part of a MAJOR SPEECH (my capitalization) the Republican governor plans to give today …”
The phrase “major speech” should be banned from every reporter’s vocabulary — and used by commentators only AFTER the speech in question is delivered.
Whether a speech is “major” or “minor” is strictly in the ear — and judgment — of the listener.
