What possesses people in positions of authority to say/post/blog these things?
Janice Daniels, mayor of the Oakland County city posted this statement on her Facebook page: “I think I am going to throw away my ‘I Love New York’ carrying bag now that queers can get married there.”
The Oakland Press reported that at a council meeting earlier this month, Daniels told the crowd that she regretted the language she used in her Facebook post, adding:
“I still believe marriage is between one man and one woman, but it was inappropriate to use the language in describing a group of people. That’s all I want to say. I ask for God’s forgiveness, and I would ask for your forgiveness as well.”
I really don’t get it. There is certainly no shortage of examples of what happens when a person in the public eye makes a reckless slur. The consequences are generally severe.
And yet people keep making the same mistake over and over again.
