The Canadian Flash
LSJ stringer Dan Kilbridge here, providing you with the nickname of Michigan State's latest recruit in Arjen Colquhoun. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound defensive back from W.F. Herman High in Windsor, Ontario brings more speed to the table and puts MSU's 2011 recruiting class at 10 members. He is the second defensive back alongside Trae Waynes, the Wisconsin prospect whom MSU landed two weeks ago.
Colquhoun ran a 4.42 40-yard dash at MSU earlier this month, while Waynes has been clocked in the high 4.3's.
I caught up with Colquhoun and Herman coach Harry Lumley earlier today and will have a full story in tomorrow's LSJ despite my aching typing fingers, (Those Canadians are polite, but boy do they speak quickly).
"They care about the players - They care more about you as a person than a football player," Colquhoun said of his decision to go green. "They're not just trying to recruit you for football, they're trying to take you as a boy and make you a man."
I assume morning workouts with MSU strength and conditioning coach Ken Mannie can accomplish that feat at warp speed.
Colquhoun is apparently very strong for his size and hopes to put on some more of "The Weight", (I couldn't resist at least one reference to The Band in this Canadian-themed entry) before he arrives in East Lansing.
That's four purely defensive players for MSU's 2011 class thus far, with three offensive players and three "athletes". Judging from the 22-member class of 2010, that means we're nearing the halfway point - MSU picked up its 10th commitment for the 2010 class in safety Isaiah Lewis on July 30, 2009.
For a coaching staff which places so much emphasis on in-state recruiting, seven of the 10 current 2011 prospects are from out of state, (or country in Colquhoun's case). Two hail from Wisconsin, two from Ohio and one each from Pennsylvania, Georgia and Ontario.
What does it all mean? You tell me, Hey, Joe enthusiasts.
