Concert Review: Green Day and A.F.I. Rock Detroit

BillieJoe-AnneErickson-1 Few rock bands can claim to have as much influence and staying power as Green Day. From selling millions of albums in the early ‘90s (at 15 million, 1994’s “Dookie” is the world’s best-selling punk rock album) to launching a Broadway musical this year (based on the band’s Grammy-winning 2004 release “American Idiot”), Green Day isn’t going anywhere.

At their heart, Green Day is a DIY punk revivalist who introduced the ‘70s punk rock ethos to a younger, broader audience. Catchy, three-chord tunes about suburban life and the desire for something more resonated with an entire generation of music newbies--- and now, the next.

Green Day aren't exactly the kind of guys you’d expect to play a mellow show. And they didn’t last week at DTE Energy Music Theatre in Clarkston. Playing in front of a sold-out crowd of 15,000, newly bleach blonde lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong sped across the stage, danced,  collapsed, got up again and amped up the audience that ranged in age from little kids to older adults.

Green Day pulled out all tMikeDirnt-AnneErickson-2he stops during their two and a half-plus hour set, constantly pulling audience members onstage to sing along and reaching deep into their catalog of chart-topping goodies. While bass player Mike Dirnt and drummer Tré Cool kept instrumentals tight and lively, Armstong did most of the antics. He sported a feather boa. He fired off Green Day T-shirts. He squirted the crowd with a giant water canon. He stayed BillieJoeArmstrong-AnneErickson-4wired throughout.

He also gave Michigan a lot of love. “Maybe Green Day will relocate to Michigan,” Armstrong announced two songs into the set, garnering a crescendo of cheers.

“Louder than New York City during ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams,’” he announced later in thBillieJoeArmstrong-AnneErickson-3e set.

And the hits kept coming: “21st Century Breakdown,” “Hitching A Ride,” “She” (which was uber fast), “Brain Stew/Jaded” (expanded on to a longer jam), “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “Welcome to Paradise.”

Opening, A.F.I. (A Fire Inside) brought its Misfits-inspired goth-punk. Hot off a gig at Lollapalooza (as was Green Day), lead singer Davey Havok leap onstage, mic in fist, ready to bring the band’s emotion-drenched tracks such as “The Leaving Song Pt. II,” “Miss Murder” and “Girls Not Grey” to the crowd. At first, the crowd seemed light (A.F.I. started at 6:50 p.m.). But after people started to hear the band’s blast of energy, groups of listeners gathered around the stage, and Havok directed security not to force them to take their seats. By the end of both A.F.I. and Green Day’s sets, it’s safe to say, the crowd was totally spent.

-Regarding the return of Ozzfest, Ozzy Osbourne says this: "Well, we had no idea in the first place it was going to take off as big as it did. And it had become a yearly thing, and I was kind of getting a bit tired of doing the same routine every year in and year out. So I took a break from it for a couple of years... It's been one of the great experiences of my life."

WEEKEND-RIFF -Friday: Secondhand Serenade's John Vesely has made a splash on Top 40 and pop radio with his No. 7 Billboard track, "Fall For You." The success came quickly-- and it surprised Vesely."It was kind of surreal, because it wasn't necessarily expected at all," he says. "One thing led to another, and it was really fun to see that happen."

Vesely (right) is really a solo musician who performs under the stage name SecondhandSerenade-photocredit-emily-shur Secondhand Serenade. -All weekend: The Great Lakes Folk Festival returns to East Lansing this weekend, and it's a bit scaled down from past years. Read about the festival and get the line-up, here.

That's the case with Detroit boy Kid Rock (below), who plays sold-out shows at DTE Energy Music Theatre in Clarkston Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Even though the dates are sold out, a small amount of tickets might be release before each show.

Concert Recap: Shinedown, Chevelle, Puddle of Mudd, Sevendust, More at DTE Energy Music Theatre

ClintLowery-3-Erickson As Sevendust burst into the chorus of the turbulent "Unraveling" at DTE Energy Music Theatre on Saturday, vocalist Lajon Witherspoon paced back and forth on stage, at times swinging his lengthy dreadlocks, while lead guitarist Clint Lowery gutted out machine-gun style riffs balanced out by melodic, ethereal passages.

The Atlanta, Ga.-based hard rock group is part of a line-up of bands on the 2010 Carnival of Madness Tour, which also features 10 Years, Puddle of Mudd, Chevelle and headliner Shinedown. Over 10,000 people crowded the Clarkston outdoor amphitheater on Saturday for the tour’s only Michigan stop-- many traveling from Lansing.

For Shinedown drummer Barry Kerch, this was a birthday show.

"Now, I've known this guy for 10 years, and we've Shinedown-2 made a promise never to get each other birthday gifts, so I didn't get you one thing," lead singer Brent Smith announced, before telling the audience they were going to give Kerch a present and leading the crowd in a mega round of, "Happy Birthday."

One of the best-received songs of Shinedown's set was the group's cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd's, "Simple Man," which blends emotive, acoustic guitar playing (ala guitarist Zach Myers strumming his Taylor 814ce) with soulful vocals that show Smith is rooted in the classic sounds of Otis Redding, Ella Fitzgerald and Chris Cornell. The crowd cheered, and almost everyone stayed for the three-song encore of "Simple Man," "Fly From the Inside" and "Second Chance."
