Weekend Riff *Halloween Edition*: Killer Costume Parties, Live Music, GWAR in Concert
All Hallows' Eve is upon us. And with Halloween falling on a Sunday this year, that means there is plenty to do all weekend long. Just one tip: Whatever your personal proclivities, make you dress up as something, anything, if you're going to a costume party.
-Friday: Want to celebrate Halloween with dark, dangerously heavy tunes, just fitting for Fright Night? On Friday, Mac's in Lansing hosts an entire night of metal music featuring Michigan bands, including Genocya, All Ends Black, Blacktooth Brigade, Tres Negroes and Omnia Discordia. Wear your best costume, because the night will bring a Halloween costume contest and more masquerade mayhem.
-Also Friday: Eisley (left) is a family affair. Three sisters, a brother and a cousin make up the Tyler, Texas-based indie rock band. The group is bonded by not only blood but also by an admiration for songwriting greats as Radiohead's Thom Yorke and Paul McCartney. See the group play Friday at the MSU Union Ballroom. -Friday and Saturday: It doesn't get much more Halloween than a GWAR show. The intergalactic shock rockers bring their bloody show to Grand Rapids' Intersection Friday and Detroit's Harpo's Saturday.
-Saturday: The JHD and The Trip play The Loft in downtown Lansing, and the night brings a costume contest for a $200 grand prize.
-Sunday: Not tired yet? Good. Because The Loft brings popular Grand Rapids alt-rocker The Outer Vibe (above right) to town. This all-ages show is perfect for everyone from families to college kids to older Halloween partiers.
-All week: Say you missed Schuler Books & Music's Zombie Night? You can still head over and view the zombie pin-up photos. They're up all week long. Scary. Stuff.
