Weekend Riff: MSU Professors of Jazz Go Carribean, All Get Out at the Loft, Lansing Metal from Genocya
Lansing Music: This weekend brings entertainment from the MSU Professors of Jazz in Old Town, Lansing metal band Genocya and much more
-Thursday: Alternative rock band MuteMath went back to basics on their new album, “Odd Soul,” out Oct. 4. According to drummer Darren King, the New Orleans gentlemen needed to shed any self-doubt or worry and get back to making music that they, as a collective bunch, loved and felt was authentic. -Friday: The Ten Pound Fiddle is back in action, and ethereal Canadian duo Dala perform Friday, bringing elegant original songs and unique approaches to cover songs from the great songwriters. The duo of Amanda Walther and Sheila Carabine hold a Juno Award, which is Canada’s Grammy, and they’re one of the more buzzed about young folk acts on the scene. -Also Friday: The MSU Professors of Jazz go Caribbean, with trumpeter Etienne Charles unveiling compositions that harken back to his Caribbean roots. The native of Trinidad will be backed by his fellow professors in this final concert in a series based on the cultural influences that inspire their music. The concert is supported, in part, by the Arts Council of Greater Lansing. Tickets are $25 via Paypal on STPConcerts.com, or at Elderly Instruments in Lansing and Archive Books Shop in East Lansing. -Friday and Saturday: Lansing metal band Genocya are taking a few months off, but before the break, catch the guys play Friday at the Machine Shop in Flint and Saturday at Oade's Hidden Camel in Lansing. Saturday's show also features local metal from the likes of Purgatory Grove, Hillside Barrier, Six Seconds to Oblivion, Slight Case of Death, Project Apocalypse and Russ from C.O.R.E.
